A United Boeing 777-200, registration N797UA performing flight UA-194 from San Francisco,CA (USA) to Munich (Germany) with 286 people on board, was enroute at FL350 over Newfoundland and Labrador (Canada) about 5.5 hours into the flgiht when the captain decided to call the relief first officer from the crew rest to replace the first officer and to divert to Washington Dulles,DC (USA). The aircraft landed safely on Dulles' runway 19C about 2:40 hours later.

The Canadian TSB reported the first officer showed symptoms of food poisoning, the crew declared a medical emergency with air traffic control.
