An American Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N342AN performing flight AA-98 (dep Feb 18th) from Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) to London Heathrow,EN (UK), was enroute at FL370 about 70nm southeast of Halifax,NS (Canada) when the crew received an altimeter disagree message and the captain's altimeter started to oscillate between -400 and +100 feet around actual altitude with the first officer's instruments remaining in agreement with the stand by instruments. The crew decided to turn around and divert to New York JFK,NY (USA) for a safe landing on JFK's runway 31L about 90 minutes later.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled.
