An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-700, registration N613AS performing flight AS-1240 from Seattle,WA to Oakland,CA (USA), was climbing through 7000 feet out of runway 16L when the left hand engine (CFM56) failed prompting the crew to shut the engine down. The crew decided to return to Seattle and landed safely on runway 16L about 25 minutes after departure.

The airline reported the #1 engine was shut down.

Passengers reported there was loud noise and the aircraft "jumped".

A replacement Boeing 737-900 registration N442AS reached Oakland with a delay of about 3:45 hours.
