A Virgin Australia Boeing 737-800, registration VH-YFF performing flight DJ-1693 from Canberra,AC to Coolangatta Gold Coast,QL (Australia), was on final approach to Gold Coast Airport's runway 32 at about 22:25L (12:25Z) when the aircraft encountered windshear and moderate turbulence, the crew continued for a touchdown on the runway. After touchdown the aircraft hydroplaned towards the left edge of the runway before the crew regained control and slowed the aircraft without further incident.

The Australian Transportation Safety Board rated the occurrence an incident and opened an investigation stating: "Upon touchdown, the aircraft aquaplaned towards the left side of the runway before the crew regained control."

Earlier that day most flights to/from Gold Coast Airport had been cancelled due to severe weather and lack of an instrument landing system available at the aerodrome.
