A Srilankan Airbus A330-300, registration 4R-ALS performing flight UL-122 from Chennai (India) to Colombo (Sri Lanka), was on approach to Colombo descending through about 5500 feet about 15nm northeast of the aerodrome.

A Flydubai Boeing 737-8 MAX, registration A6-FME performing flight FZ-1026 from Colombo (Sri Lanka) to Male (Maldives), was climbing through 5000 feet out of Colombo's runway 04 about 15nm northeast of the aerodrome.

According to ADS-B data the separation reduced to 300 feet vertical and 1.1nm horizontal.

The Flydubai Boeing descended by about 300 feet before continuing the climb again. The Srilankan continued the descent to 5000 feet and levelled off.

Srilanka's Civil Aviation Authority rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation annotating: "Loss of separation".
