Passengers reported they smelled smoke in the cabin which appeared to be coming from the cockpit. Soon after the captain announced they would return to Melbourne.
The airline reported a technical issue prompted the return to Melbourne. All passengers disembarked safely.
The aircraft is still on the ground in Melbourne about 13 hours after landing back.
On Mar 7th 2024 Sri Lanka's AIB reported during climb through about FL220 a strong burning odour followed by smoke developed in the cockpit followed by smoke in part of the cabin. The aircraft returned to Melbourne. The occurrence was rated an incident and is being investigated by Sri Lanka's AIB.
