An Air Canada Airbus A330-300, registration C-GOFV performing flight AC-71 from Algiers (Algeria) to Montreal,QC (Canada), was climbing out of Algier's runway 05 when a flock of seagulls impacted the right hand side of the aircraft prompting the crew to stop the climb at FL050 and return to Algiers for a safe landing on runway 09 about one hour after departure.

The Canadian TSB reported the crew received multiple ECAM messages after the bird strike and actioned the related checklists. Maintenance inspected the right hand engine (Trent 772), replaced a problem and found blade 18 of the fan bent.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 43 hours, then positioned to Montreal and returned to service.
