A Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N171DN performing flight DL-78 from New York JFK,NY (USA) to Prague (Czech Republic) with 217 people on board, was climbing out of New York's runway 22R when the aircraft experienced an engine (PW4060) surge. The crew continued the climb to FL330. After levelling off at FL330 the crew advised they did have a left hand engine surge on takeoff rotation, the engine instruments were normal afterwards, they might have a blown tyre thought they thought that was unlikely as the sound most likely had been the engine surge, the crew declared emergency advising they were doing an overweight landing. The aircraft dumped fuel and returned to land on JFK's runway 31L about one hour after departure.

A replacement Boeing 767-300 registration N176DN reached Prague with a delay of 4.5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 24 hours after landing.
