An Air Canada Boeing 777-300, registration C-FJZS performing flight AC-311 from Montreal,QC to Vancouver,BC (Canada) with 440 passengers and 14 crew, was enroute at FL340 about 390nm northwest of Toronto,ON (Canada) when a passenger informed the crew he could see something glowing on the wing surface. The first officer inspected the wing and observed what appeared to be a scorch mark accompied by what appeared to be a static discharge. The flight crew declared PAN PAN and diverted to Toronto, where the aircraft landed on runway 23 about an hour later. Emergency services inspected the aircraft before it taxied to the apron.

The Canadian TSB reported maintenance discovered two locations on the wing where rubberized sealant material from a seam in the wing panels had become loose and was pulled into the airstream, as well as two broken bonding straps in the area, which allowed a static charge to build up. The sealant and straps were replaced.
