A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700, registration N718SW performing flight WN-4695 from Islip,NY to Tampa,FL (USA) with 129 passengers and 6 crew, had pushed back onto taxiway S and was cleared to taxi to holding point runway 06 via S and A. The aircraft was taxiing along taxiway S, when the aircraft skidded right off the taxiway just prior to taxiway A at 06:22L (11:22Z). No injuries occurred, however all gear went off paved surface onto soft ground. The crew called tower stating "We just made your day very exciting ... " reporting they had skidded right off the taxiway and requested a tow to get them back onto paved surface. The passengers deplaned onto the taxiway. The aircraft received substantial damage.

All runways remained operative, operations however had to change with aircraft needing to backtrack runway 06 for departure.

The FAA reported the aircraft mis-negotiated a turn and exited the taxiway ending up with the nose gear in the grass.

Pictorial evidence shows all gear in the grass.

On Dec 28th the FAA reported the aircraft sustained substantial damage and rated the occurrence an accident.
