A J-Air Canadair CRJ-200, registration JA202J performing flight XM-2837 from Sapporo to Hanamaki (Japan) with 42 passengers and 3 crew, landed on Hanamaki's runway 20 at about 20:17L (11:17Z) but veered left off the runway and came to a stop with the nose gear on soft ground about 10 meters off the runway edge. No injuries occurred.

The airport was temporarily closed until the aircraft could be moved off the runway.

Japan's Transportation Safety Board rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation dispatching three investigators on site.

The airline said, the reported runway friction values did not match the values experienced during the landing. Prior to the landing snow removal had been conducted, there had been 14cm/5.5 inches of snow.
