A passenger told The Aviation Herald: "It was a minor incident but something which might get quite popular with your readers - unruly lavatories!" Prior to departure the captain had announced there were minor issues with the lavatories. The passenger commented such "minor issues" are rarely "self curing" so they turned around after 2.5 hours into the flight and landed back in Chicago about 5 hours after departure with just 2 lavatories remaining, that were still working. While on the way back it also appeared there might have been some electrical problems, a number of fellow passengers were unable to adjust their seats, flight attendants had to return the seats to their upright positions manually, there were flickering cabin lights in the back of the cabin and the inflight entertainment system was playing up.
The aircraft remained on the ground in Chicago for about 19 hours, then positioned back to Frankfurt, where the aircraft remained on the ground for another 39 hours before returning to service.
