A JAL Japan Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration JA616J performing flight JL-6775 from Tokyo Haneda to Sapporo (Japan), departed Haneda's runway 16R when upon rotation the first officer's altimeter failed. The crew continued the departure, climbed to FL270 (not being RVSM compliant) and continued the flight to Sapporo for a safe landing.

A listener on frequency reported the crew re-cycled the relevant circuit breaker in flight, however, to no avail. As they were not compliant with reduced vertical separatation minima (RVSM) they needed to stop the climb at FL270 which meant a higher fuel burn than predicted. In addition, due to the Corona Pandemic the choice of alternate aerodromes was limited, only Haneda was availble as an alternate. In case of a go around at Sapporo they would have needed to immediately return to Tokyo Haneda, the listener summarized the radio transmissions.
