An Azur Air Ukraine Boeing 767-300, registration UR-AZK performing flight QU-4490 from La Romana (Dominican Republic) to Kiev (Ukraine), was enroute at FL310 about 250nm northeast of La Romana in contact with San Juan (Puerto Rico) Center when the crew requested to return to La Romana. The aircraft turned around maintaining FL310. When the aircraft reached the top of descent about 100nm northeast of La Romana ATC cleared the flight to descend to FL150 on own discretion, the crew reported 3 minutes later they were leaving FL310 for FL150. The aircraft subsequently entered a hold at 9000 feet to burn off fuel and landed safely on La Romana's runway 11 about 2:15 hours after departure and about 100 minutes after the decision to turn around. After landing maintenance opened the right hand engine (PW4056) for examinations.

The passengers were taken to hotels.
