A Dornier Nigeria Aviation AIEP Dornier Do-328, registration 5N-BUN performing charter flight DAV-487 from Port Harcourt City Airport to Lagos (Nigeria) with 16 passengers and 4 crew, veered right off the runway 18L while landing in Lagos at 15:44L (14:44Z). There were no injuries.

Nigeria's AIB have dispatched investigators on site.

On Mar 16th 2021 the AIB rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an ICAO Annex 13 investigation. A preliminary report as well as further investigation reports are going to be released in due time.

DANA operates 5 Do-328: 5N-DOW, 5N-DOX, 5N-DOY, 5N-BUN, 5N-BVO and 8 Do-228: 5N-ARP, 5N-DOA, 5N-DOB, 5N-DOD, 5N-DOJ, 5N-DOK, 5N-DOL and 5N-DOM. According to their website they only perform charter flights and have no scheduled flights.

5N-DOY was seen flying around Abuja on Mar 14th 2021 about 15:10Z (17:10L), 5N-BVO was seen arriving in Abuja around 18:10Z (20:10L). None of the other aircraft were seen flying.

On Mar 14th 2021 evening runways 18 were active for landing. Unclear, unsharp photos and an equally poor video seem to suggest that the aircraft may have landed on runway 18L coming to a stop about 760 meters/2500 feet past the runway threshold.

On Jul 1st 2021 Nigeria's AIB released their preliminary report stating the first officer (59, ATPL, 12,032 hours total, 4,960 hours on type) was pilot flying, the captain (54, ATPL, 7,100 hours total, 2,011 hours on type) pilot monitoring. The aircraft performed an ILS approach to runway 18L.

The AIB summarized the sequence of events:

At about 15:43 h, DAV487 touched down right of centre line, runway 18L.

According to the PF, during the landing roll, he retarded power levers to ground idle and then applied thrust reversers. Captain requested controls of the aircraft and the Co-pilot handed over control at speed below 60 knots decelerating.

The Co-pilot further stated that at about 50 knots, the Captain noticed a sudden veering of the aircraft to the right and called for “CONDITION LEVERS MIN” position. He then regained control of the aircraft momentarily. Thereafter, the aircraft veered right again uncontrollably onto the grass lawn and stopped.

At 15:44:27 h Tower called DAV487 to confirm Ops normal, DAV487 responded “Ops NOT normal…, we over ran the runway”. Tower asked DAV487 if they needed any assistance and the crew answered in assistance and the crew answered in the affirmative, after which the crew started the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) and shut down the aircraft engines.

The Captain briefed cabin crew and passengers. All passengers disembarked normally without injury and were transported in the shuttle bus to the terminal building.

The incident occurred in daylight and Visual Meteorological Conditions prevailed.
