A S7 Sibir Airlines Airbus A319-100, registration VP-BHQ performing flight S7-59 from Moscow Sheremetyevo to Ekaterinburg (Russia), was holding at FL070 at Ekaterinburg, the flaps were already extended to position 1, the captain was pilot flying. About 7 minutes after entering the hold the captain's airspeed indication dropped rapidly to 110 KIAS prompting the captain to descend the aircraft (reaching FL064 at the lowest point) and increase engine thrust without being able to stop the speed decline on his airspeed indicator. The captain handed controls to the first officer, who slowed the aircraft, initially climbed back to cleared FL070 and completed a safe landing on Ekaterinburg's runway 08R about 10 minutes later.

Rosaviatsia reported that the investigation revealed the flap limit speed had been exceeded during the attempted stall recovery. The cause of the false speed indication was not mentioned however.

Radar data show the aircraft had been holding at 200 and 230 knots (upwind and downwind) over ground, during the recovery (downwind) the speed increased to above 280 knots over ground while the aircraft descended to FL064. The aircraft subsequently climbed to about FL071 before settling briefly at FL070 at about 230 knots over ground. The aircraft then descended and positioned for the approach following the event.
