A Virgin Australia Boeing 777-300, registration VH-VOZ performing flight VA-9 from Brisbane,QL (Australia) to Los Angeles,CA (USA), was descending towards Los Angeles when the crew advised of an issue with the landing gear prompting emergency services to take their stand by positions. The aircraft touched down safely on Los Angeles' runway 25L and slowed. While turning off the runway tower observed smoke coming from the rear right main tyres and advised the crew. The crew taxied clear of the runway and stopped. The aircraft was subsequently towed to the apron.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 11 hours, then departed for the return flight VA-8 with a delay of about 5.5 hours.

The airline later reported the aircraft had suffered a hydraulic issue.
