THY A333 at Port Harcourt on Dec 31st 2019, runway excursion, tyre damage

A THY Turkish Airlines Airbus A330-300, registration TC-LOL performing flight TK-627 (dep Dec 30th) from Istanbul (Turkey) to Port Harcourt (Nigeria) with 284 passengers and 11 crew, suffered a number of damaged tyres upon landing in Port Harcourt at about 03:30L (02:30Z).

Sources claim the captain landed the aircraft next to the runway due to confusion of runway lights (edge lights confused for center line lights).

Local media claim citing Nigeria's Civil Aviation Authority NCAA that the aircraft sustained substantial damage.

Nigeria's NCAA confirmed the occurrence rated a serious incident, Nigeria's Accident Investigtion Board is going to investigate.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Port Harcourt about 15 hours after landing.

The return flight TK-628 was cancelled.

On Apr 3rd 2020 Nigeria's Accident Investigation Bureau (NAIB) released their preliminary report stating the occurrence was rated a serious incident.

The aircraft performed an ILS approach to Port Harcourt's runway 21 in night conditions at calm winds. The aircraft touched down on runway 21 right of the runway center line about 612 meters past the runway threshold, the right main gear departed the runway edge about 639 meters past the threshold, impacted and damaged three runway lights and returned onto the runway about 1037 meters past the threshold. The aircraft was back on the runway center line about 1478 meters past the threshold.

The aircraft sustained damage to three main tyres (#3, #7 and #8), the right hand engine received a dent inside the engine inlet, the right inboard flap received a dent at its lower surface. Three runway lights were damaged, the debris of the runway lights as well as tyre debris was recovered from the runway.
