A United Boeing 737-900, registration N39475 performing flight UA-366 from San Diego,CA to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA), was enroute at FL310 just initiating to step climb when the right hand engine (CFM56) failed emitting continuous streaks of flame. The crew stopped the climb, reduced the engine to idle and diverted to Albuquerque for a safe landing on runway 08 about 30 minutes after leaving FL313.

A passenger reported he felt the aircraft was shaking though not in turbulence and saw streaks of flame from the right hand engine, the flames stopped. The crew announced they had reduced the engine to idle thrust and were diverting to Albuquerque.

The airline reported the aircraft diverted to Albuquerque due to a technical problem with one of the engines.
