An American Airlines Airbus A319-100, registration N5007E performing flight AA-944 from Saint Louis,MO to Miami,FL (USA), was in the initial climb out of Saint Louis' runway 30L when the aircraft sustained a bird strike. Tower told the crew "if you don't mind your engine is smoking a little bit more than good", the crew advised they were assessing the situation. The crew subsequently decided to return to Saint Louis, stopped the climb at about 6000 feet and landed back on runway 30L about 15 minutes after departure.

The FAA reported two engine (CFM56) blades broke as result of a bird strike.
