A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700, registration N249WN performing flight WN-975 from Pittsburgh,PA to Nashville,TN (USA), was on approach to Nashville's runway 20L descending through about 2500 feet when the aircraft received a bird strike. The aircraft continued for a safe landing.

The NTSB released their brief final report concluding the probable cause of the accident was:

a collision with a bird.

The NTSB reported the aircraft sustained substantial damage to its horizontal stabilizer writing: "Damage to the airplane included a 12 inch crack in the forward spar, requiring replacement of the horizontal stabilizer. Bird residue was sent to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History laboratory, and identified as a Great Blue Heron."
