A Eurowings Airbus A330-200, registration D-AXGF performing flight EW-1140 from Dusseldorf (Germany) to Punta Cana (Dominican Republic) with 303 people on board, was climbing out of Dusseldorf's runway 23L when an engine (CF6) ingested a bird. The crew continued the climb at first, then stopped the climb at FL200 and decided to return to Dusseldorf. The aircraft burned off fuel and landed safely back on Dusseldorf's runway 23L about 2 hours after departure.

The airline reported a bird strike prompted the crew to return to Dusseldorf, the flight was postponed to noon the following day.

A replacement A330-200 registration D-AXGG reached Punta Cana with a delay of 23 hours.
