the intrusion of a fragment of a retaining ring into the induction pipe of the oil pump of the right hand engine preventing the circulation of oil in the engine oil system. Due to this condition the crew was forced to shut the engine down and apply flight procedures with one engine inoperative.
The CAAII reported that during climb out of Isle of Man about 10 minutes into the flight the crew noticed a decrease of the right hand engine's (M601E) oil pressure and an increase in the inter-turbine temperature (ITT). The crew decided to shut the engine down and return to Isle of Man's Ronaldsway Airport for a safe landing.
Following the flight the engine was removed from the aircraft and sent to the manufacturer for examination. The right hand engine had accumulated 3096 hours since new, 602 hours since last overhaul and 155 hours since last inspection.
The engine manufacturer found upon dismantling the engine, that the engine's main bearing had been damaged and the oil pump's shaft had fractured. A foreign object was found on the inlet nozzle of the oil pump which looked similiar to the fragment of a retaining ring, which was subsequently identified as part of a retaining/locking ring of a cogwheel of the oil pump through metallurgic examination.
The CAAII analysed that the fragment embedded in the oil pump's inlet created a torsional load onto the pump's shaft, twisted it until it fractured and thus stopped the engine oil circulation leading to the drop of oil pressure and increase of ITT. The insufficient oil circulation caused the engine's main bearing to seize.
The engine manufacturer recommended measures to prevent a repeat of the retaining ring failure, which were adopted as safety recommendation.
