A United Boeing 747-400, registration N117UA performing flight UA-893 from San Francisco,CA (USA) to Seoul (South Korea), was climbing out of runway 28L, when the crew reported a slight gear issue and requested to level off at 10,000 feet, about two minutes later the crew advised they would need to dump fuel and return to San Francisco. The aircraft dumped fuel for about 40 minutes and landed safely on runway 28R about 70 minutes after departure.

A passenger reported that at the end of the gear retraction sequence an unusual mechanical sound was heard, the passenger suspected possibly the gear doors with an issue. The aircraft stopped the climb at 10,000 feet and flew along the coast over the Ocean, the captain announced the gear had retracted, however they still had an unsafe indication. The aircraft dumped fuel, after completion of the fuel dump the gear was extended very early and the aircraft continued for one of the smoothest landings the passenger had ever experienced. The passenger saw no emergency services around. Due to crew duty time limitation the flight was cancelled.

Gossip is that one of the left hand gear struts had a problem, unclear however whether main or body gear.
