A Vietnam Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration VN-A353 performing flight VN-1180 from Ho Chi Minh City to Haiphong (Vietnam), was in the initial climb out of Ho Chi Minh City when the crew levelled off at 5000 feet after the left hand engine (V2533) stalled. The crew reduced the engine to idle thrust and returned to Ho Chi Minh City for a safe landing on runway 25L about 18 minutes after departure.

A replacement A321-200 registration VN-A348 reached Haiphong with a delay of about 2 hours.

On Dec 19th 2018 The Aviation Herald learned that the crew received an ENG STALL indication associated with vibrations and noise while climbing through 3000 feet. The crew levelled off at 5000 feet, worked the engine stall checklists, the ENG STALL indication ceased, however, the EGT indications remained high though within operating limits. The crew kept the engine running on idle power and returned to Ho Chi Minh City for a safe landing on runway 25L. A technical examination revealed foreign object debris had caused damage to the turbine (hence the ENG STALL indication was incorrect). An investigation has been opened by both the accident investigation board as well as the engine manufacturer.
