Saudi Arabian A321 near Jeddah on May 17th 2018, engine shut down in flight

A Saudi Arabian Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration HZ-ASU performing flight SV-632 from Amman (Jordan) to Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), was descending towards Jeddah, when the right hand engine's (CFM56) sound changed signficantly and the crew received a high vibration indication (9.9 units) together with high EGT (981 degrees C). The crew shut the engine down and continued to Jeddah for a safe landing on runway 34C.

Saudi Arabia's reported a first examination found damage to the low pressure compressor, high pressure compressor, high pressure turbine and low pressure turbine, the low pressure and high pressure spools were locked together. The engine is being further torn down to explore the root cause. The occurrence was rated an incident and is being investigated.
