A UPS United Parcel Service Airbus A300-600, registration N134UP performing flight 5X-2691 from Las Vegas,NV to Louisville,KY (USA), was in the initial climb out of Las Vegas' runway 26R when the crew received a fire indication for the left hand engine (PW4158) and stopped the climb at 7000 feet MSL. The crew shut the engine down, discharged both fire bottles and returned to Las Vegas for a safe landing on runway 26R about 8 minutes after departure.

The NTSB reported maintenance observed soot and thermal damage to the #1 engine. The occurrence was rated a serious incident and is being investigated.
