The French BEA released their final report in French concluding the probable causes of the incident were:
the runway excursion was the result of loss of control of the nose gear which turned perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft.
The loss of nose wheel steering control was the result of the simultaneous failure of MFC 1b and 2b computers during a critical phase of flight.
The failure of both MFCs has been identified to be the result of a system error in synchronizing generating aural alerts to the crew.
The loss of braking could not be explained by the investigation.
The BEA reported that following the flight an inspection revealed the fault LEDs for both MFC 1b and 2b were illuminated.
Each MFC consists of two modules A and B working independently. The MFC handles a multitude of signals with one or more modules, in particular the MFC handles the generation of aural alarms by the Centralized Crew Alerting System.
Analysis showed the MFCs failed due to a software bug synchronizing aural alerts to be generated synchroneously across the two modules of the MFC.
On Aug 23rd 2018 the BEA also released their English version of the final report, the BEA translated the conclusions as:
The runway excursion on landing was the result of the loss of control of the nose gear and of it turning so that it was perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the aeroplane.
The loss of control of the nose gear was due to a simultaneous double fault on MFCs 1B and 2B, detected by the crew during a critical flight phase.
The cause of this double fault was identified and was the result of a system error during the synchronization of the generation of aural warnings for the crew.
The loss of braking power felt by the captain could not be explained by the investigation.
