An Air Canada Boeing 767-300, registration C-FMWP performing flight AC-831 from Geneva (Switzerland) to Montreal,QC (Canada) with 215 people on board, was enroute at FL360 about 65nm northeast of Gander,NL (Canada) when a smoke detector activated in a mid wing lavatory. Cabin crew discovered an actual fire in the lavatory trash receptacle and discharged a halon extinguisher, while the flight crew declared PAN and advised of a possible diversion to Gander. After it had been determined that the fire was extinguished and there was no damage to the aircraft the flight crew cancelled the PAN and continued the flight to Montreal for a safe landing.
