A Malaysia Airlines Airbus A330-200, registration 9M-MKX performing flight MH-181 from Chennai (India) to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) with 195 passengers, was enroute at FL390 near Penang (Malaysia) when the cabin pressure reduced until the crew initiated an emergency descent to 10,000 feet and released the passenger oxygen masks. The aircraft subsequently diverted to Penang International Airport, located about 150nm north of Kuala Lumpur, for a safe landing on runway 04.

The incident aircraft reached Kuala Lumpur as flight MH-5401 reaching a maximum of 10,000 feet about 10.5 hours later.

The airline reported the aircraft was in the last stages of flight when it descended from FL390 to 10,000 feet due to the loss of cabin pressure.

Passengers reported the aircraft was about 30 minutes into the flight when the cabin pressure was lost. The aircraft continued at low altitude to Malaysia where it landed at Penang.

The Aviation Herald learned that a right hand air conditioning duct ruptured causing the loss of pressure.
