An Iberia Airbus A330-200, registration EC-MKI performing flight IB-6889 from Madrid,SP (Spain) to Shanghai Pudong (China), was enroute at FL370 about 200nm north of Novosibirsk (Russia) when the aircraft turned around to return to Madrid and climbed to FL380. About 2 hours later the aircraft turned slightly now heading directly to Helsinki (Finland). ON final approach to Helsinki's runway 22L the crew received indication that the fuel quantity in the right hand fuel tank was low. The aircraft landed safely on runway 22L about 4:10 hours after the decision to turn around.

Passengers reported the captain announced they were returning due to a fuel leak, subsequently advised they were diverting to Helsinki.

The airline reported the aircraft diverted to Helsinki for technical reasons.

The aircraft remained on the ground in Helsinki for about 17.5 hours, then departed Helsinki for Shanghai and reached the destination with a delay of 25 hours.
