Common Loon (Photo: P199)A Horizon Air de Havilland Dash 8-400 on behalf of Alaska Airlines, registration N422QX performing flight QX-2306 from Redding,CA to Los Angeles,CA (USA) with 73 passengers, was on approach to Los Angeles descending through approximately 6600 feet near the Dodger Stadium when a bird struck the leading edge of the right hand wing. The crew declared emergency and continued for a safe landing on Los Angeles' runway 24R about 6 minutes later. No injuries occurred.

The FAA reported, that the bird impacted the leading edge of the right hand wing and the fuel tank. The aircraft received substantial damage, the occurrence was rated an accident. The NTSB is investigating.

The NTSB reported on Nov 20th 2010 that the airplane was doing 220 knots at 6600 feet when the bird impacted the leading edge of the right hand wing. The bird impact created a hole of 12 inches (30 cm) in the leading edge and internal damage to the wing. The bird remains have been sent to the Smithsonian Institude in Washington for determination of the bird species.

On Mar 2nd 2012 the NTSB released their factual report stating based on flight data and cockpit voice recordings that the aircraft was flying at 234 KIAS 18nm north of Los Angeles International Airport at an altitude of 7500 feet MSL, when a Common Loon (Gavia immer), weight up to 5kg/10.9 lbs, impacted the leading edge of the right hand wing.

On Apr 21st 2012 the NTSB released their final report concluding the probable cause of the accident was:

An in-flight collision with a bird.
