Canada Rouge B763 at Vancouver on Jan 1st 2018, audible thump on departure, unusual odour on climb

An Air Canada Rouge Boeing 767-300, registration C-FMWQ performing flight RV-1718 from Vancouver,BC (Canada) to Cancun (Mexico) with 282 passengers and 8 crew, departed Vancouver's runway 08R when the crew heard a loud thump sound. The engine parameters were all normal, the crew continued the takeoff therefore. During initial climb an unusual odour was observed on the flight deck. Assuming that a tyre might have burst the crew elected to leave the gear extended and to return to Vancouver, advised ATC of a possibly blown tyre, stopped the climb at 6500 feet and positioned for a return. In the meantime a runway inspection found feathers on the runway. The aircraft landed safely back about 20 minutes after departure.

The flight was cancelled.

The Canadian TSB reported maintenance found evidence of a bird strike, possibly involving a Blue Heron, on the right hand engine (PW4060) causing minor damage to the outlet guide vane outer platform within the manufacturer's tolerance. The aircraft was returned to service.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for about 24 hours before returning to service.
