A Skywest Embraer ERJ-175 on behalf of United, registration N140SY performing flight OO-5541/UA-5541 from San Francisco,CA to Redmond,OR (USA), was departing San Francisco's runway 01R when an engine (CF34) ingested a bird prompting the crew to stop the climb at 2500 feet and return to San Francisco for a safe landing on runway 28L about 10 minutes after departure.

The following departure rejected takeoff after being hit by a turkey vulture, too, see Incident: United B738 at San Francisco on Nov 22nd 2017, rejected takeoff due to bird strike.

The runway needed to be closed for about one hour until the runway could be cleaned, arrivals and departures were significantly delayed as a result.
