PIA AT42 at Lahore on Aug 31st 2012, runway excursion, right main gear collapse

A PIA Pakistan International Airlines Avion de Transport Regional ATR-42-500, registration AP-BHJ performing flight PK-653 from Islamabad to Lahore (Pakistan) with 42 passengers and 4 crew, veered right of runway 36R while landing in Lahore at about 15:10L (10:10Z) and came to a stop completely off the runway with the right main gear collapsed. No injuries are being reported, the aircraft sustained substantial damage.

Runway 18L/36R was closed for about 26 hours until the aircraft was recovered and towed off the runway.

Passengers reported they were not aware of any problem prior to touch down, the aircraft skidded off the runway due to heavy rain causing the right main gear to collapse. There were no injuries.

Another passenger reported the aircraft suffered a very hard touchdown followed by the collapse of the right hand gear.

Pakistan's CAA reported emergency services were alerted after the aircraft had touched down. Nobody of the about 35 occupants was taken to a hospital.

The airline confirmed the aircraft had touched down on the runway but during roll out skidded off the runway due to heavy rain. The pilot brought the aircraft back under control but the right main gear of the aircraft collapsed. There were no injuries, the passengers were bussed to the terminal.

On Sep 11th 2012 the French BEA reported quoting Pakistani Authorities, that the aircraft touched down just at the beginning of the paved surface - undershoot area - to the right of the extended runway 36R centerline, started skidding to the right and came to a stop about 1700 feet past the runway threshold and 60 feet off the right edge of the runway. The right main gear collapsed, debris off the aircraft was collected from the beginning of the runway end safety area ahead of runway 36R to the final position of the aircraft. The fuselage received damage as well, the extent of the damage is still being assessed.
