A Finnair Airbus A350-900, registration OH-LWG performing flight AY-69 from Helsinki (Finland) to Hong Kong (China) with 269 people on board, was climbing out of Helsinki's Vantaa Airport when the crew stopped the climb at FL190 and entered a hold maintaining a maximum speed of 285 KTAS. After about 20 minutes the aircraft subsequently descended to FL100 and entered another hold for about 45 minutes, then returned to Helsinki for a safe landing at a higher than normal speed (182 knots over ground) on runway 04R about 105 minutes after deparure.

The airline reported the aircraft returned to Helsinki due to a technical problem. The aircraft could not immediately return to Helsinki due to the amount of fuel loaded and therefore had to hold, the aircraft landed safely back about 2 hours after departure. Attempts to repair the aircraft over night were not successful, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.

The airport reported the aircraft landed at a slightly higher than normal speed.
