A Spicejet Boeing 737-800, registration VT-SGZ performing flight SG-703 from Varanasi to Mumbai (India) with 183 people on board, landed on Mumbai's runway 27 in heavy rain at 21:57L (16:27Z) but overran the end of the runway and came to a stop with all gear on soft ground. There were no injuries, the passengers disembarked onto soft ground and were taken to the terminal.

On Sep 20th 2017 a passenger reported that the aircraft had been holding for about 30 minutes at high altitude due to traffic congestion. Finally the captain announced they were now commencing their approach. When the aircraft was over the runway it became clear something was wrong, the aircraft didn't touch down but floated for a long time. When the wheels finally touched down it was too late and the aircraft went beyond the runway end and ended up with the nose gear on soft ground, which abruptly stopped the aircraft. The captain then announced everyone should remain seated explaining what happened and advising that help from the ground was about to arrive. However, no stairs arrived and the passengers were instructed to disembark via the slides. A fellow passenger opened an overwing exit and jumped down the wing, the others went for the slides at the doors.

Runway 09/27 remained closed for about 23 hours until the aircraft was recovered and removed from the runway.
