A United Boeing 767-300, registration N642UA performing flight UA-959 from London Heathrow,EN (UK) to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA), was enroute at FL300 about 20nm east of Manchester,EN (UK) about 21 minutes into the flight when the crew received abnormal indications for the right hand engine (PW4060) prompting the crew to turn around and return to London. The aircraft initially maintained FL300, the crew subsequently shut the engine down. The aircraft landed safely on Heathrow's runway 27L about 35 minutes later.

The flight was subsequently cancelled.

The airline reported an engine surged.

A passenger reported the captain announced the right hand engine had shown abnormal indications, began vibrating and subsequently losing oil quantity requiring them to shut the engine down and making the return necessary. They were landing heavy and at high speed, brakes were hot requiring emergency services to monitor and cool the brakes, the engines were shut down and they anticipated to remain at their position off the runway for about one hour.
