A Delta Airlines Airbus A330-300, registration N810NW performing flight DL-72 from Atlanta,GA (USA) to Amsterdam (Netherlands), was climbing out of Atlanta's runway 09L when the aircraft received a lightning strike. In the absence of abnormal indications the crew continued the flight and was enroute at FL290 about 140nm southwest of Washington Dulles,DC (USA) when the the right hand engine's (PW4168) anti ice system failed. The crew decided to return to Atlanta due to weather conditions. The aircraft landed safely back on Atlanta's runway 09L about 4.5 hours after departure.

A replacement A330-300 registration N816NW reached Amsterdam with a delay of 8 hours.
