A Lufthansa Airbus A380-800, registration D-AIMJ performing flight LH-463 from Miami,FL (USA) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was climbing out of Miami when the crew stopped the climb at about FL275 reporting the smell of smoke in the cabin and decided to return to Miami. The aircraft dumped fuel and landed safely back in Miami about one hour after departure.

A passenger reported they were about 30 minutes into the flight, the aircraft already over the Bahamas, when they smelled smoke. The aircraft soon turned around and returned to Miami dumping fuel on the way back.

The aircraft remained on the ground in Miami for about 51 hours then positioned to Frankfurt as flight LH-9923 and after further checks in Frankfurt resumed service the same day, Dec 13th 2015, about 72 hours after landing back in Miami.

On Dec 15th 2015 The Aviation Herald received information that maintenance was unable to reproduce the problem or identify any source/cause of the smell.
