An Avianca Airbus A318-100, registration N595EL performing flight AV-9398 from Bogota to Pasto (Colombia) with 99 passengers and 5 crew, was climbing out of Bogota when the left hand engine (CFM56) failed prompting the crew to stop the climb at FL230, shut the engine down and return to Bogota for a safe landing on runway 13L.

On Dec 23rd 2015 the French BEA reported in their weekly bulletin that examination of the left hand engine revealed fractured turbine blades. Colombia's Accident Investigation Board rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation.
