A Volotea Airlines Boeing 717-200, registration EI-EXA performing flight V7-1230 from Venice to Cagliari (Italy), was on approach to Cagliari's runway 32 when a large bird impacted the aircraft. The crew continued for a safe landing on runway 32.

Damage preventing the return flight was discovered after the passengers boarded the aircraft for the return flight V7-1231. The passengers were asked to disembark, the flight was postponed to the next day.

Passengers having boarded for the return flight reported the captain indicated a large seagull had damaged the aircraft and asked them to disembark again. The passengers complained they were abandoned and spent the night at the airport.

The occurrence aircraft was able to perform the return flight the following day with a delay of 29 hours.

Cagliari is known for a number of species of birds including Flamingos that affect air traffic.
