An Alitalia Airbus A330-200, registration EI-DIR performing flight AZ-650 from Rome (Italy) to Toronto,ON (Canada), departed Fiumicino Airport's runway 16R when a loud bang was heard. The crew continued the climb but stopped the climb at FL200 and decided to return to Rome. The aircraft landed safely back on Fiumicino's runway 16R about 45 minutes after departure.

A replacement Airbus A330-200 registration EI-DIP reached Toronto with a delay of 7:15 hours.

A passenger reported there was a loud bang, the passenger thought from an engine (CF6) during the departure, about 15 minutes later the crew initiated the return to Rome.

Another passenger reported according to the crew the aircraft came into contact with a sea gull.
