A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration N937DL performing flight DL-2802 from Minneapolis,MN to Tampa,FL (USA) with 148 passengers, was climbing out of Minneapolis' runway 17 when the crew reported a smoke detector had gone off and cabin crew had smelled a burning odour in the back of the cabin, the crew did not declare emergency but stopped the climb at about 5000 feet and returned to Minneapolis for a safe landing on runway 12R about 10 minutes after departure. Emergency services did not detect the cause of the smoke indication and odour.

Passengers reported they remained on board for about an hour after landing, then disembarked normally.

A replacement MD-88 registration N913DE reached Tampa with a delay of 3 hours.
