A Mistral Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A on behalf of Alitalia, registration OY-YAB performing flight AZ-1821 from Pantelleria to Trapani (Italy) with 24 people on board, was enroute when air traffic control informed the crew that a nose wheel had been found on the departure runway and had been identified to belong to their aircraft. The crew continued to Trapani, performed a low approach to have the landing gear checked from the ground which confirmed one of the nose wheels was missing, and performed a safe landing.

The return flight AZ-1822 was cancelled.

The occurrence aircraft was still on the ground in Trapani about 33 hours after landing and returned to service on Sep 15th 2015.

On Sep 17th 2015 Italy's ANSV reported the occurrence was rated a serious incident, the ANSV has opened an investigation into the loss of one of the nose wheels.

On Sep 22nd 2015 the French BEA reported in their weekly bulletin, that the crew noticed vibrations after rotation for takeoff, tower advised there were some parts "tearing out from aircraft". The aircraft continued to Trapani, the left hand nose wheel was missing. According to the BEA the occurrence was rated an accident and is being investigated by Italy's ANSV.
