A Lufthansa Airbus A340-300, registration D-AIGO performing flight LH-773 from Bangkok (Thailand) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was enroute at FL360 about 30nm northeast of Ankara (Turkey) when the crew decided to divert to Ankara after 6 of nine toilets on board failed. The aircraft landed safely in Ankara about 30 minutes later.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 2 hours, the continued the journey and reached Frankfurt with a delay of 2:45 hours.

The airline reported a child's toy had blocked a central pipe disabling six of nine toilets. The landing was just in time for all on board.

A passenger reported the captain announced that they were monitoring the toilet problem for a couple of hours already, they didn't want to divert to Iran or Pakistan, they were down to three working toilets and now diverted to Ankara. Passengers were permitted to disembark in Ankara and use the lavatories in the terminal, all of the toilets on board were out of service during the ground time. The crew subsequently explained that the issue could not be fixed on the ground in Ankara and they were going to continue to Frankfurt with just the three toilets available. The passenger added: "So second part of the flight (ESB FRA) was, technically speaking, as the first part (3 toilets operational)." The passenger commended flight and cabin crew as well as ground staff in both Ankara and Frankfurt for the handling of the flight.
