A Delta Airlines Boeing 757-200, registration N696DL performing flight DL-8801 from Atlanta,GA to New York JFK,NY (USA), was on a VOR approach to JFK's runway 13L and had already received landing clearance when the crew declared emergency reporting a hydraulic failure and requesting emergency trucks to check the aircraft after landing, they would be able to vacate the runway. The aircraft landed safely on runway 13L at a higher than normal speed about a minute later, vacated the runway at the last exit Y before the runway end, about 2300 meters/7500 feet down the runway, and stopped on intersection taxiways Y and YA waiting for the emergency vehicles to arrive, tower advising they were already on their way, the vehicles were just crossing runway 22R at that point. When the first vehicles arrived the crew explained they were worried about the hot left hand brakes, they had no nose wheel steering, they had shut down their engines, needed to be chocked with no parking brakes available, and needed to be towed to the gate. Ground staff advised there was hydraulic fluid on the runway near taxiway E, about 1700 meters down the runway, emergency services advised there was hydraulic fluid leaking at the main gear. The crew advised the temperatures of brakes looked not too hot, they wanted to be towed to the gate and have passengers disembark there. The aircraft was towed to the apron about 30 minutes later.

In the meantime all further arriving traffic was redirected to shortened runway 13R.

A ground observer reported all gear doors were open and the aircraft was also using reduced flaps.
