An American Airlines Airbus A320-200, registration N654AW performing flight AA-669 from Philadelphia,PA to Seattle,WA (USA) with 142 people on board, departed Philadelphia's runway 09L when shortly after becoming airborne the crew declared emergency and advised they would climb straight out to 5000 feet. The crew of another aircraft suggested the crew should shut down their left engine, there was fire from the engine. A short while later the crew requested to return to Philadelphia runway 09R and level off at 2000 feet reporting they had, they think now, a left hand engine failure. Tower advised they could not join a left hand pattern below 3000 feet, the crew climbed to 3000 feet, then requested delay vectors needing some time to work the checklists, subsequently the crew advised the engine was still running at idle, they believed it was a compressor stall, and the aircraft returned to Philadelphia for a safe landing on runway 09R about 30 minutes after departure.

Ground observers called 911 reporting an aircraft on fire climbing out of Philadelphia.

The airline said, the engine did not lose power and remained operating throughout the flight, it burned excess fuel through the exhaust during departure.

A replacement Airbus A320-200 registration N126UW reached Seattle with a delay of 2 hours.
