An Allegiant McDonnell Douglas MD-83, registration N874GA performing flight G4-848 from St. Petersburg,FL to Richmond,VA (USA) with 150 people, was enroute at FL330 about 110nm south of Greensboro,NC when the crew needed to shut the left hand engine (JT8D) down advising ATC that it was a precautionary shut down, they do not have any indications, do not anticipate they need to evacuate after landing but would stop on the runway, want emergency services check the aircraft and then take it from there. The aircraft landed safely on Greensboro's runway 23L.

Passengers reported there was a loud bang, then the crew announced they would divert to Greensboro due to an engine issue.

A replacement Airbus A320-200 registration N220NV reached Richmond with a delay of 6 hours.
