An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N557AS performing flight AS-6 from Los Angeles,CA to Washington National,DC (USA) with 159 passengers and 6 crew, was climbing out of Los Angeles' runway 25R when the aircraft was struck by lightning, stopped the climb at FL200 with the crew reporting there were no system malfunctions and returned to Los Angeles for a safe landing about 30 minutes after departure.

The flight was cancelled.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for 18 hours then positioned to Seattle as flight AS-9816.

The airline reported the crew returned to Los Angeles as precaution after the crew felt the aircraft had been struck by lightning.
